Founded in 1872 as a land-grant college, Virginia Tech is the most comprehensive university in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is among the top research universities in the nation.

Virginia Tech research institutes, centers, laboratories and faculty groups in the Washington, D.C., metro area offer private industry, local and federal agencies and other institutions of higher education in the region opportunities to expand scientific collaborations, to apply technical and scientific knowledge to important issues in the region, and to expand business opportunities.

In the past years these research efforts have contributed more than $15 million to the region.
