Scholarships:
Need based scholarships are available. Apply for them within the registration portal (as the second part of the program application) and we will contact you about our decision prior to the start of the program.
Program Communication:
Our main method for communicating with you—parents, guardians and participants—will be through the email you list on the program application. PLEASE make sure that all email addresses you list in your application are accurate and that you check them regularly.
Each program has a mandatory student and parent virtual orientation. Please view your program information for that date.
Meals:
Meals are provided for full day programs and snacks for half day programs.
Activities and instructors:
All activities will be taught by Virginia Tech faculty, staff and/or graduate and undergraduate students. Our instructors are selected for their excellent teaching skills and their passion for sharing their expertise with youth. Many of these instructors have won awards for their amazing teaching and/or contributions to their fields.
Program Counselors:
Our program counselors are undergraduate and graduate students chosen for their dedication and ability to work with youth. They are trained prior to the programs and go through rigorous background checks. Program staff will supervise the students from check-in until check-out. Most staff are studying some sort of science and will be able to answer your student's questions about college majors, career interests, college life, and Virginia Tech.
Expectations for Students:
We expect all students to always behave responsibly and respectfully. We expect them to be attentive and polite during activities even if a particular topic is not their favorite. We expect students to be kind and respectful to their fellow students and to all program staff.
Before arriving at the building, students and their parent/guardian are required to read and sign our “Code of Conduct and Consequences” form, which outlines behavioral standards. Students who do not comply will be warned once and then sent home if the behavior does not improve.
Students are not allowed to leave campus during the program without the permission of their parent/guardian and the director of D.C. area K-12 Programs.
Parking / arriving at Academic Building One:
For liability purposes, parents will need to send an email noting that they release the university from any liability for their children to drive themselves, use the metro or walk home.
Parking at Virginia Tech's Academic Building One in Alexandria, Va, and may be paid through the ParkMobile App (zone #85129). Students may drive to Academic Building One if their parents/guardians allow it but will not be allowed to use their personal vehicle until the end-of-day departure.
Attire & Supplies:
Classrooms can be chilly or warm, depending on the power of the AC. All medications should be in their original packaging and enclosed in a plastic Ziplock bag with the student's name on them. Computers are NOT needed.
Check-in/Check-out:
Check-in and check-out will be outside the front door of Virginia Tech's Academic Building One in Alexandria, Va. Staff will meet parents at the door. Please be on time and please do not register your child for a program if you know they will need to miss part of the week.
