The Hokie One Stop (HOS) is a centralized student-focused service center that provides students with access to multiple departments and information. We provide student services relating to registration, transcripts, billing, housing, transportation, and much more.

New Students

Access onboarding information as a new student, including new student guides and expectations for students. 

The New Students webpage maintains a step-by-step guide to starting at Virginia Tech in the Washington, D.C., area.  International students should visit the Cranwell International Center's new student pages to learn additional steps and procedures.

Incoming fall graduate students can submit their ID Card Photo online and pick up their ID at the Northern Virginia Center Resource Center during the first week of classes.

The first point of contact for undergraduate students studying, interning, or conducting research at one of the Virginia Tech sites in the Northern Virginia area is their home department, faculty advisor, or local supervisor.

Undergraduate students should refer to the Hokie One Stop webpages for information about additional local or remote university support services from Blacksburg and help navigate their overall Virginia Tech experience. Email DCHokieOneStop@vt.edu for assistance.

BIT-Cyber students
Students enrolled in Virginia Tech’s Business Information Technology - Cybersecurity Management and Analytics (BIT-Cyber) program in Northern Virginia should refer to the program website for a list of resources or contact the Assistant Director, Karen Wrightsman, at bitcyber@vt.edu or 703-538–3764 to set up a phone or virtual appointment.

Student Services

Students have access to a wide range of student services and resources, including counseling, personal and academic support, and more. Transportation and housing resources on this page are specific to D.C. metro area students.

Cranwell International Center provides a wide range of programming and services to all undergraduate and graduate international students at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and the D.C. area. International student advising and immigration services are provided by a team of international student advisors who are assigned a portfolio of academic colleges/schools/departments. Depending on their program of study, the international student advisor for a D.C.-based student may be based either at Blacksburg or Falls Church.

Health Insurance
International students are required to have health insurance either through the Virginia Tech Student Health Insurance Plan or a comparable plan. Please visit the Student Medical Insurance International Student page to learn how to enroll.

  • TimelyCare
    As part of Virginia Tech's partnership with TimelyMD, students have free, 24/7 access to virtual care services with TimelyCare – the virtual health and well-being platform designed for college students. Students will have access to:
    • Unlimited on-demand mental health support 24/7, available to all Virginia Tech students throughout the world, through TalkNow
    • Unlimited access to health coaching, available to all Virginia Tech students throughout the world
    • Scheduled counseling sessions, limited to 12 sessions per academic year, available to all Virginia Tech students throughout the United States
    • Register for TimelyCare online or download the app.
  • The Student Medical Insurance office assists students with enrolling in Virginia Tech's Student Health Insurance Plan. They also help students clarify the often-confusing language of insurance, navigate local providers, and submit claims. Contact them at smi@vt.edu or 540-231-6226.
    • International students are required to have health insurance either through the Virginia Tech Student Health Insurance Plan or a comparable plan.
    • Domestic students are encouraged, but not required, to have personal health insurance.
  • Hokie Wellness strives to educate and empower every Hokie to take an active and engaging day-to-day approach to their wellness. They offer several virtual workshops, connection sessions, and other wellness resources. View the current list of wellness topics.

The Hokie Passport is your official university identification card that permits authorized access to university services and facilities. The Northern Virginia Center Resource Center issues new and replacement Hokie Passports. Students must be currently enrolled to obtain a Hokie Passport. Incoming fall graduate students can submit their Hokie Passport photo online and pick up their ID at the Northern Virginia Center Resource Center during the first week of classes.

Students can schedule an appointment for replacement IDs. They can also contact the library directly for more information at nvclibrary@vt.edu or 703-538-8340.

The Office of Veteran Services works with the U.S. Department of Veterans Services to process all veteran and military student education benefits documentation. Prospective and current student veterans or military-connected students using Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits should contact the Office of Veteran Services at veteran@vt.edu or 540-231-5815 to set up a phone or virtual appointment.

Academic study can sometimes be challenging. If you feel like you need additional help to succeed in your program, several resources are available.

  • The Graduate School Ombudsperson is a confidential and informal resource for those facing conflicts or challenges that cause stress in your work here at Virginia Tech. The ombudsperson specializes in conflict resolution and can help you navigate your challenges to gain focus and clarity and move forward constructively. Though based in Blacksburg, they are available to D.C. area students through phone and Zoom meetings. The ombudsperson also travels to the D.C. area periodically for in-person meetings. This office is a great place to start if you are unsure of some viable options and strategies to help alleviate the stress your concern causes. Contact Bryan Hanson, the Graduate School Ombudsperson, at 540-231-9573 or gradombud@vt.edu to schedule an appointment.
  • The Dean of Students office supports and cares for students in crisis and connects students to university and community resources. Students should reach out for help with personal/family emergencies, personal/academic support, emergency financial assistance, Honor System and Student Conduct advising, class absence verification, to report other general complaints, or if you don’t know where to go for help. For assistance or to schedule an appointment, please contact Assistant Dean of Students Phillip Hernandez de Wright at phernandez@vt.edu or call 540-231-3787.
  • Virginia Tech is working toward a community free from sexual harassment and violence. We commit to taking all reports seriously, treating all individuals with compassion and respect, and holding those who perpetrate harassment and violence accountable. To report assault or harassment, visit SAFE at VT for information.
  • The Office for Equity and Accessibility promotes a learning and working environment free from harassment and discrimination for employees and students. The office answers questions about the university’s anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies. The D.C. area equity manager works with the Cook Counseling Center, Human Resources, and the Graduate School Ombudsperson to create a robust support network. The Hokie One Stop offers a single point of contact for services related to registration and enrollment, financial aid, and student billing.  The HOS staff will be able to assist students and visitors with questions related to:

U-PASS
Virginia Tech partners with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to allow eligible students to participate in the University Pass (U-Pass) Program. U-Pass provides full-time Virginia Tech students in the D.C. metro area with unlimited access to Metrorail and Metrobus throughout the semester. Capital Bikeshare
Virginia Tech has signed on with Capital Bikeshare to offer deeply discounted student membership rates. The discount rate is $25 per year, a significant savings compared to the regular rate of $95. Please refer to the Capital Bikeshare flyer for details on how to sign up and use the discount code vtech4924va.

The Virginia Tech sites in the D.C. area do not share a common parking system. Visit the links to learn about parking options available at the sites below.

Academic & Learning Support

The Graduate School has Graduate Admissions and Academic Progress (GAAP) advisors who provide various services to graduate students in the D.C. metro area. They assist students from admission to graduation with all academic progress needs. Services provided include:

  • Processing Graduate School forms: In-State Tuition, Reduced Tuition, Change of Campus, Change of Program, etc. 
  • Readmission and leave of absence approval
  • Plan of Study final approval
  • Preliminary and Final Exam approvals
  • Processing official transcripts for the student record, test scores, TOEFL, etc.
  • Degree completion advising

The GAAP team for the Graduate School in the D.C. area is located at the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church, VA. Advisors and staff can be reached via email at dcgradschool@vt.edu. You can schedule Student Advising Appointments in person or online.

  • Registering for classes is done through HokieSPA . Your faculty advisor or graduate program coordinator  will assist you with course selection and registration. Once you have registered, you will receive an invoice to pay tuition and fees. 

Many departments at Virginia Tech provide services designed to meet students' academic and learning assistance needs. Utilizing these services allows students to reach their full academic potential and helps them plan for future academic and professional endeavors.

  • Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) strives to remove disability-related barriers to maximize access and opportunity for all students. For assistance with arranging appropriate services and accommodations, please email ssd@vt.edu or call 540-231-3788 to set up a phone or virtual appointment.
  • The Virginia Tech Writing Center is free for all Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff at all levels. Although based in Blacksburg, D.C., area students should use this online appointment request form to schedule a virtual appointment or consultation.
  • Academic advising: Contact your faculty advisor or graduate program coordinator  for specific academic advising for your program or major.
  • Graduate Teaching Assistants: Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) are vital to the university’s learning mission. GTAs can access many teaching resources through the Graduate School, the TLOS Professional Development Network, and the Academy for Graduate Teaching Assistant Excellence, VT-GRATE.

Northern Virginia Resource Center 

The Northern Virginia Resource Center is a branch of the University Libraries and a support center for students and faculty in the D.C. area. Library staff can assist all students with finding resources, accessing collections, and requesting/borrowing materials. Consultations can be provided in person or online. The facility is located on the first floor of the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church and is equipped with group and individual study rooms, research materials, 3D printers, and workstations. Contact the library at nvclibrary@vt.edu or 703-538-8340. Students can also reserve a study room in the library using the online reservation system.


WAAC Center Library

The Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center Library in Old Town supports architecture programs in the D.C. area. Note that the library is non-circulating: you may use books within the library or take them to your desk, but you may not take them home.


Interlibrary Loan

Virginia Tech students may access additional books via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Use your VT ILLiad account to request books from the University Libraries catalog or other affiliated libraries. WAAC students can contact Marlene Koenig at mkoenig@vt.edu for more information on creating an account.


Returning borrowed University Library materials

  • Materials can be returned at the following locations:
    • Northern Virginia Center: An outdoor book return is available 24/7 near the building's entrance. When the building is open, visitors can return books at the library service desk on the first floor or use the return slot within the orange wall next to the library entrance.
    • VTRC Arlington: The book return is on the 6th floor within the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) area. Access requires a key fob or Hokie Passport, available only to faculty and staff who work in the building and students enrolled for in-person classes.
    • Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center: The book return is the gray "mailbox" inside the main entrance. Access to the building requires a key fob available to WAAC faculty, staff, and students.
  • You can also use the USPS Prepaid Return Label that came with your request from Interlibrary Loan.

Test proctoring

NEW Funding and Financial Resources

Virginia Tech offers various financial aid and assistance programs that can be applied toward college expenses.

A few graduate students receive a graduate assistantship to support research or teaching. The academic departments provide these assistantships. Though rare, any available on-campus student employment positions in the D.C. area would be advertised in the weekly newsletter. Additional opportunities may also be advertised in Handshake.

Community Engagement

Join the community of Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff members to navigate your student experience through social and community events. You can also learn more about the D.C. metro area.

The Graduate School’s weekly D.C. area newsletter is the main communication channel for students in the D.C. area. The newsletter is published weekly on Mondays.  We also maintain an archive of past issues.

All current students should automatically receive this newsletter.  If you are not receiving the newsletter, please contact Cathy Grimes (cathg14@vt.edu) and ask to be manually added. Will need to update this to Ginny according to how this will be updated



The greater Washington, D.C., metro area Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) seeks to nurture the graduate student community across departments by providing social events that foster inter-department, interdisciplinary conversation. The representatives liaise with the VT GSA in Blacksburg to improve scholarly development and the graduate community by creating and implementing goals based on the issues and concerns of graduate students on campus.
