EndNote is one of the most powerful citation managers available today. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of EndNote, including adding references to your library, organizing your library, and using EndNote to cite references within a document. Informational interviews consist of conversations with individuals in careers of interest to you. They can be beneficial in helping you collect useful information about how well a specific role fits with your skills, interests, and values. In addition, they are powerful networking tool. This hands-on workshop is open to anyone who wants to work with data in R. The Graduate Honor System relies on trained graduate students and faculty to hear academic integrity violation cases. It takes a one-hour training to become a panelist, and after that faculty and graduate students can serve on preliminary review and review panels. All graduate students are invited to become panelists to help hear cases and actively contribute to the ongoing conversation about standards of academic integrity. Come learn how to get started with this popular coding tool for writing technical papers! LaTeX (pronounced Lay-tech or Lah-tech) is a free typesetting system designed for technical publications that can be used for many writing projects. Be ready to code along with the instructor during this interactive workshop while you learn how to create your first article, how to add content including text, figures and citations, where to learn more about using LaTeX, and how to get the most out of Overleaf. Citation managers like EndNote, Mendeley, and Zotero are powerful tools that can help you save, organize, and cite your references. Their use can also help improve your workflow and make the research process easier and less stressful. This session will focus on ways to get the most out of your citation manager. By the end of the session, you’ll be able to integrate citation managers into your existing workflow, identify personal best practices for using citation managers, and use advanced features of the citation manager of your choice to streamline your research workflow. This session will assume that you are already using and are familiar with a citation manager like EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley. From 1565 to 1815, Manila galleons ships brought thousands of free and enslaved Asians to Acapulco, where they were labeled “chinos” (Chinese) in Mexico. This marked the start of a long history of racialization that grouped diverse Asian peoples into essentializing categories. Many "chinos" navigated their minoritized status to forge new intra-Asian, Afro-Asian, and Asian-Indigenous identities defining their colonial experience. This talk explores the earliest histories of Asians in the Americas and highlights the importance of their stories in today’s political and cultural context. Dr. Diego Javier Luis, author of The First Asians in the Americas: A Transpacific History, is the Rohrbaugh Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University. Call for Science Writers: Food, Water, Communities Storymaps
Have a story to share about a community and natural resources? Looking science communication opportunity to share said story to a wide audience? The editor of the Food, Water, and Communities blog, sponsored by the VT's Center for Communicating Sciences, are currently recruiting graduate students to share their stories about communities that have faced a natural resource challenge which has inspired their graduate work.Interested writers should email Bria Weisz (bria@vt.edu) by Monday, September 30th with a 3-5 sentence description of their story. Writers can describe a community that influenced their own work or interview a peer to write about. If selected, writers will be contacted to contribute a 500-700 word story for the StoryMap. Nutshell Games Registration Continues!
Attention graduate researchers! Do you want to share your work with the world? Register for the Nutshell Games, the fun and fast-paced presentation competition hosted by the Center for Communicating Science. The Games will take place on Saturday, November 2, 4:30 p.m. at the Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg, with a preparatory workshop on Wednesday, October 23, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
After finishing their 90-second talks about their research “in a nutshell,” contenders will be ranked by a panel of campus and community judges. Each participant receives a professionally recorded video of their presentation. We can only accommodate 30 researchers to give talks, so register soon!Five winners’ home departments will receive $500 for the winner’s use in program- sanctioned research costs or conference participation.

Join Our Study on Trust Between Humans and AI
Join Our Study on Trust Between Humans and AI Participate in our study, "Modeling Trust Between Human and Autonomous Systems in Search and Rescue Scenarios." We’re exploring how an AI assistant can help in search and rescue missions within a Minecraft simulation.
Study Overview
You’ll use either your intuition with a map or guidance from an AI assistant to locate targets. The study lasts 25-30 minutes, including a 5-minute demo and a 20-minute simulation. You can participate in person or remotely.
Your Role
Decision-Making: Every 30 seconds, choose between following the AI or using your intuition.
Search: Find as many targets as you can in each interval.
Feedback: Rate your confidence in the AI and your own decisions after each interval.
Confidentiality
No personal information is collected. Data will be anonymous and used only for research. Participation is voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time.

External Funding Opportunities
VT/VCCS Teaching Fellows Pilot Program
Virginia Tech is partnering with the Virginia Community College System to offer VT graduate students in selected disciplines an opportunity to teach as adjuncts in the Spring 2025 semester. These paid internships are available to any domestic or international student with at least 18 graduate credit hours in their discipline. Each student will be paired with an experienced mentor for the duration of the semester. Teaching modalities will be in-person or synchronous online, and three separate CC locations will be part of the pilot program. Students will gain experience as “Faculty of Record,” which will enhance a CV/Resume for anyone wishing to pursue an academic career. However, academic career aspirations are not mandatory and any Master’s or Doctoral student is welcome!
